BKANR: Gopher Soccer Review / Preview - Week 2

The Gopher's had their home opener this last Friday and their second home game on Sunday. The nasty weather they had at FSU the previous Sunday must have followed them home as both games this weekend had weather delays. *Note - The Gophers played UND at home earlier in August but that game was an exhibition game.

Gophers went 2-0 this weekend by recording two shutouts when they faced Marquette University & South Dakota State University. The week before the Gophers went 1-1 in the state of Florida, easily defeating Stetson University 10-1 but then letting a close fought game get away from them in the end 4-1 against #2 Florida State.

The start of this game was weird in that the start time kept changing! First the game moved from 7:00 pm to 5:00 pm and then there was a weather delay due to nearby lightning. Unlike in Florida, the weather seemed to work out in our favor as the Gophers would record their second shutout of the season, winning 1-0 on a goal by #7 Sydney Squires (Fr. - Fwd.) with an assist by #13 Taylor Stainbrook (RS Jr. - Fwd.).

MU was 1-1 (0-0 Big East) going into the game having defeated Loyola 3-0 in their home opener but dropping to Northwestern 1-0 to start the season. After losing to the Gophers 1-0 on Friday, they would lose to then #28 Nebraska on Sunday 3-2. Still, this as a good win for the Gophers as MU was ranked 29th having recently been ranked as high as #15, but after this weekend are no longer ranked (no votes).. MU may have tried hard, but the Gophers #GIVEEVERYTHING.

The weather was nicer for this game as was the result. The Gophres would record their third shutout on the season by defeating the Jackrabbits from South Dakota State 2-0. #7 Sydney Squires (Fr. - Fwd.) scored her second goal of the weekend to put the Gophers up 1-0 at the 19th minute. Last weeks Big Ten Offensive Player of the week, #2 Simone Kolander (So. - Fwd./Mid.) finished the game by scoring at the 88th minute. SDSU falls to 0-4 on the season with previous losses to Creighton, North Dakota (UND), and then #19 Wisconsin.

These two shutouts this weekend led to #00 Tarah Hobbs (So. - GK) being named College Sports Madness's National Defensive Player of the Week, adding to the list of honors Hobbs has recieved in her young college career.

Next Friday the Gophers travel to Oxford, Mississippi for the Ole Miss Tournament where they will play Ole Miss (2-1-1) on Friday at 7:00 p (CST) and Auburn (3-1) on Sunday 12:00 noon. While the Gophers recently received 6 votes in the most recent (9/2/2014) Coaches poll, good for 40th, these coming games should prove a good test for the Gophers. The Rebels of Ole Miss won games over Iowa State and UL Lafayette, squeaked out a tie with Georgia, and just lost to Louisville. After losing their exhibition game to Georgia and their season opener at Clemson, Auburn won their next three games, against Furman and both of their games in the Auburn Soccer Classic (vs UC Irvine & Georgia Southern, both 3-0 shutouts) to improve to 3-1. If the Gophers can pull off a sweep, especially with more shutouts, expect their standings to improve. Just don't expect it to be easy.
