With a 6-2 win over Penn State tonight, the Minnesota Gophers have officially clinched their second straight regular season Big Ten Hockey title! This means that the Gophers are still the only team to win a regular season B1G Hockey title. It also means that this crop of Gopher Hockey seniors are the first in program history to win 4 straight conference titles.
Let me repeat that. The Minnesota seniors have never played for a Gophers team that did not win a regular season title. It's easy to be spoiled as a Gopher Hockey fan, but the impressive nature of that accomplishment should not be forgotten. That's a simply dominant run of hockey, one that should now continue with another trip to the NCAA tournament.
The win also means that the Gopher will be the number one seed in the Big Ten Hockey Tournament next weekend at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. The Gophers play on Friday against the winner of the Ohio State/Penn State contest. That's next week though. First? First we celebrate!
