FIESTY JERRY KILL IS THE BEST KIND OF JERRY KILL
Have to agree with RandBall on this one. Especially when he dislikes the wearing of non-Minnesota apparel in Minnesota:
"I said, you know who I am? Yeah, I think so. I said, well, who am I? He says, ‘Coach Kill.’ I said, I’m from the University of Minnesota. You’ve got that Nebraska thing on," Kill said. "He goes, ‘Coach, I like you.’ And I said, well, you need to come by and get a shirt, but I’ll take a picture with you."
Love me some Jurry!
GOPHERS GET CREATIVE AT WIDE RECEIVER
More from yesterday's football presser via Joe C:
"Jeff will be starting out [camp] at wide receiver, and he can also do things in the backfield if needed," Kill said. "He’s talented enough to do both, but we’ll see how all that goes. He’s done good in class. Now we’ve got to see what his work habits are going to be."
Expect this story to dominate early camp headlines, as everyone will be watching how the Gophers try to get Jeff's talent onto the field.
REPLACING DAVID COBB A THREE MAN JOB
Per Marcus, the Gophers look to start with 3 running backs in rotation. That said, I'm not sure anyone expects that to last.
It wasn't that long ago that Williams, not Cobb, looked like he would be Kill's first 1,000-yard rusher at Minnesota. Two years ago, he ran for 148 yards at New Mexico State, the best rushing performance by a Gophers sophomore in seven years.
"Obviously, it's tough to replace a guy like David Cobb," quarterback Mitch Leidner said last week at Big Ten media day in Chicago. "But Rodrick Williams has done an outstanding job this offseason. I'm really looking forward to seeing him be a full-time guy who can take the majority of the load.
JOHANNESSON READY FOR THE GOPHERS
WDAY out of Fargo brings us a short video profile of new Gopher James Johannesson. In other news, I'm going to misspell his name a lot. Did Jeff Jones already steal the JJ moniker? Because I could really benefit from being able to call Johannesson "JJ" on Twitter and having people know who I mean.
PITINO WOULD GRANT JARVIS JOHNSON HIS RELEASE
I'm not sure why I saw surprise around this note on Twitter yesterday.
Gophers coach Richard Pitino said at a media news conference on Tuesday that he would "absolutely" grant medical redshirt Jarvis Johnson a release from his National Letter of Intent were the former DeLaSalle guard to decide to pursue playing elsewhere.
"He knows that and the family knows that," the coach said.
To be clear, Minnesota's medical staff didn't clear Jarvis. It's not an NCAA thing. So if Jarvis wants to transfer to a school that will clear him he is free to do so.
REDDIT HAS THE INSIDE SCOOP
