Minnesota to Retire Rachel Banham’s Jersey

The Gopher legend will see her #1 in the rafters

Rachel Banham will be the fifth Gopher to have her jersey retired.

Gopher Women’s Basketball Legend Rachel Banham will have her #1 jersey retired by the Gophers on January 1 during the Gophers game against Maryland at Williams Arena. She joins four other legendary Gophers players, Laura Coenen, Carol Ann Shudluck, Lindsey Whalen and Linda Roberts in having their jerseys hang in Williams Arena.

Banham was named the 2015-16 Big Ten Player of the Year and was a top five finalist for the Wooden Award and a First Team All-American by both AP and ESPNW. Banham owns Minnesota’s career (3,093), season (914) and game (60) scoring records. Her 3,093 points makes her the Big Ten’s all-time leading scorer, and the sixth most prolific scorer in women’s college basketball history.

In addition to the three scoring records above, Banham is the Gopher career record holder in scoring average (21.5 points per game), games in double figures (134), field goals (1,081), field goal attempts (2.496), three-point field goals (354), three-point attempts (899), free throws (577), free throw percentage (85.7%), and games played (144).

The Gophers will honor Banham during their Big Ten Home Opener against Maryland on January 1st. As is the Gophers current jersey retirement policy, while Banham’s #1 will go up in the rafters, the number will not be retired and will be available for future Gopher players to wear.

Congrats to Rachel! The Gophers begin their season Saturday November 12th with a home game against Harvard.
