Minnesota Football Recruiting: Gopher Sports Podcast with Recruiting Director Billy Glasscock

Another outstanding NSD podcast featuring Minnesota Recruiting Director Billy Glasscock.

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

This is not something TDG has created or even something we are remotely affiliated with (other than the time I joined the podcast), but the weekly Gopher Sports Podcast with Mike Grimm and Justin Gaard had Billy Glasscock to talk about the 2016 recruiting class on National Signing Day.

The podcast was outstanding and fully of interesting information on the recruiting process, how the staff does things and just how crazy recruiting 17/18 yr old kids in today's world really is.

Please listen...you won't regret the 45 minutes or so you'll spend on it.

A few interesting notes....

My favorite nugget from the interview was when he was able to talk about the D1 caliber kids in the state.  First of all, 2016 was a fantastic year because there were so many kids locally who were Big Ten caliber players and several wanted to stay home.  I did a quick run of numbers (ones that he quoted as well in the interview, mine are similar but I went and did a quick check on Rivals), we talk about "closing the borders" and this is what it looks like in surrounding states.

  • Coach Glassock talked about some of the coaches, including new offensive coordinator Jay Johnson and OL coach, Bart Miller.  He feels they both are going to be outstanding recruiters.
  • Appreciates Coach Claeys and how he is very certain and clear about what he wants (not just in terms of recrtuiting).  He is also a numbers guy and I find it interesting how they are using height/weight/speed and other measurables to identify they players they want, narrowing their universe of potential recruits.
  • Late Signing Period, why it is hard to pass, what he'd like to see.
  • Called out Antoine Winfield Jr as a kid who not only is talented but called him maybe the "gem of this class" because of some of the intangibles he brings to the team.

A ton of great nuggets in the interview...listen...you'll thank me later.
