Believe it or not but the Gophers have not had a freshman on the Big Ten's All-Freshman team in 11 years! The last to do it was Dan Coleman in 2005. But Jordan Murphy has achieved this honor in 2016.
The freshman from San Antonio averaged 11.7 points per game (4th among Big Ten freshmen), 8.0 rebounds per game (4th among all Big Ten players) and he tied for the Big Ten lead with 9 double-doubles. All of which made him one of the 5 conference freshmen to be named to the team by the conference's 14 head coaches.
In what was a tumultuous season for the Gophers, Murphy was a constant and reliable inside presence. A very promising freshman season that should only get better as shooters develop around him and he learns to keep himself out of foul trouble and on the floor.
Joey King was also named as Minnesota's honoree for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
