Minnesota Football: Golden Nugz on a Busy Sports Day

Busy for the rest of the sports world, though pretty quiet on the college scene.

Opening Day for MLB! The boys of summer are back!  Should be a fun year for the Twins as we finally get to see the puzzle of young talent coming together. It may not play out into AL Central domination (yet) but now they are mostly all going to be at Target Field and we can watch them grow rather than just imagine them playing at AA.  Should be a lot of fun to watch Miguel Sano, Byron Buxton, Eddie Rosario, Brian Dozier and others come together with a solid pitching staff.

Twinkie Town is your source for all things Twins and you should check them out!  #oneSBNteamoneSBNdream

Oh yeah, and I guess a little something called the National Championship Game is happening tonight!

My thoughts?  I really like both of these coaches.  Roy Williams is my favorite coach in college basketball, which stems from a Nike Coaches Clinic I went to several years ago and he really stood out amongst several other P5 D1 coaches.  And Jay Wright is a very good coach of getting his teams to play his system and when he gets the right pieces they are dangerous (and fun to watch).  Hoping for a great game.

VU Hoops and Tar Heel Blog are fun spots to check today as their teams are facing off in a huge game.

Gopher Stuff

Lets cover some Gopher news shall we?

  • Gopher Baseball opened the Big Ten season and took 2 of 3 from Iowa.  The Hawkeyes were projected to be around 4th in the Big Ten this year, so this is a great start to the conference season for the Gophs who are looking to get back into contention after a couple down seasons.  Matt Fielder was 5/9 in yesterday's double-header with 5 RBI and 2 HR, seems like a strong candidate for Big Ten Player of the Week.  Oh, and Fielder also was the starting pitcher on Friday giving up 1 ER in the win.

Up next is a trip to Michigan, the favorite to win the Big Ten.
  • Don't forget...Gopher Football Spring Game is on Saturday.  1:00.  Looking like 54 and Sunny as of right now.  If you can't make it to TCF Bank Stadium, it will be televised on BTN and can be heard on KFAN with Mitch Leidner to be in the booth for the first half.
  • The Women's Gymnastics team is heading to the NCAA Championship meet after taking 2nd in the Regionals.  Good luck in Fort Worth.
  • Interesting little article on Brett Bielema speaking to the Minnesota Football Coaches Association last week.  Like I care, but he did make a comment about Brewster (without really talking about Brewster), I sort of miss that little tiff.
