The celebrations for the regular season title are over. The All Big Ten awards have been handed out. Now it's time for Minnesota to focus and make some noise in the Big Ten Tournament.
The Gophers start the tourney against Iowa. Minnesota last faced the Hawkeyes at the beginning of April, taking 2 of 3 from Iowa in the first Big Ten series of 2016. Here's a quick recap of that series:
All B1G Everything
All B1G Everything
Game 1: Minnesota 4, Iowa 1
The story of the game was Matt Fielder. He pitched a great game and kept Iowa's hitters in check, striking out 6 while giving up 3 hits and a run in 7 innings. Fielder also showed his early POY form on the offensive side of the ball, going 2-4 while scoring two runs and notching 1 RBI.
Game 2: Iowa 6, Minnesota 3
Originally scheduled for Saturday, this game was postponed due to cold temperatures and served as the first half of a double header on Sunday. Minnesota outhit Iowa, including a 3 for 5 performance from Matt Fielder, but it wasn't enough to overcome a less than superb showing from Dalton Sawyer (5 runs, 5 hits, 5 strikeouts).
Game 3: Minnesota 6, Iowa 3
Minnesota started fast, scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 1st. Pitcher Toby Anderson gave up 3 runs to Iowa in the 2nd, but locked down the Hawkeyes the rest of the way. Connor Schaefbauer had three hits, including two home runs and 2 RBI's. Matt Fiedler and Austin Athmann also homered and combined for the other 4 RBI's.
Minnesota should win this game if they intend to make any noise in the NCAA Tournament, but single elimination baseball can be just as fickle as single elimination hockey. In other words, take nothing for granted.
