Gopher Baseball got back into the win column and staved off elimination Saturday afternoon with an 8-5 win over Binghamton. The win advanced them another game and they are now slotted to face Wake Forest again after the Demon Deacons were pummeled 22-2 by Texas A&M.
Binghamton Game
The hitting finally came around for the Gophers. Seven different players had an RBI. Terrin Vavra, Matt Fielder, Micah Coffey all had doubles, Toby Hanson had a triple and Jordan Smith hit a home run.
Toby Anderson was on the mound and the junior set down 13 of the first 15 batters. Overall he only pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up 5 runs but only 2 of them were earned.
The win was the first for Minnesota in a couple weeks having dropped the season finale to Ohio State, the first two games of the B1G Tourney and then the opening game against Wake.
Up Next
A rematch with Wake who knocked the Gophers to the losers-bracket on Friday with a 5-3 win.
This afternoon's pitching matchup is an interesting one as the Gophers have held off using their typical Friday starter, Matt Fielder. The Big Ten's player of the year will likely be getting the ball today in a key elimination game. Wake will either be out John McCarren or Connor Johnstone. Blogger So Dear projected that McCarren would be the guy, the junior right-hander has 26 appearances and 4 starts on the season Johnstone has started 13 games for the Deacs.
This time around the Gophers should feel better about their chances with Parker Dunshee on the bench. They will need their bats to get going again and Fielder is facing a tough lineup.
Winner moves on to face Texas A&M tonight at 8:00 CST, loser sees their season come to an end.
