Ryan Santoso on Lou Groza Award Watch List

Santoso was one of ten semi-finalists for the award last season.

Time for some more preseason award news. Linebacker kicker extraordinaire Ryan Santoso was named to the Lou Graza Award list. The Graza award is given to the most outstanding college kicker each season. Santoso was one of ten semi-finalists for the award last season. Ryan joins Mitch Leidner and Brandon Lingen as the third Gopher named to a preseason watch list so far this summer.

What makes this announcement interesting is the placekicker news that came out in May:

Per the Star Tribune's Joe Christensen, head football coach Tracy Claeys said earlier this morning that redshirt junior kicker Ryan Santoso will take over Peter Mortell's responsibilities as starting punter. Redshirt sophomore Emmit Carpenter will enter fall camp as the favorite to take over as starting kicker, with Santoso relegated to field goals of 50 yards or more. No word on if that means Santoso will also be handling kickoffs.

Regardless of whether Ryan continues to help the Gophers as a punter or placekicker, we look forward to him making positive contributions to the team this fall!
