This season there were 18 former Gophers in NFL training camps as the NFL preseason began. The NFL cut their rosters to 75 players on Tuesday, so here is an update on whose dream is still alive, and who is looking for a new team
We start with the 2016 NFL Rookies:
Eric Murray-DB Kansas City Chiefs
Murray made one tackle in the Chiefs third preseason game, and appears to have solidified his roster spot.
95 % 100% Chance To Make The Final 53-Man Roster
Briean Boddy-Calhoun-DB Jacksonville Jaguars
BBC didn’t show up in the stats report for the Jags third preseason game, which is not a good sign. Things are not looking good for him to make the 53-man roster. Time to hope for a practice squad slot somewhere in the league. He did however make the 75 man cut down, so preseasn game 4 will be critical to any chance he might have. Unfortunately guessing he’s just a warm practice body at this time.
25 % 5% Chance To Make The Final 53-Man Roster
De'Vondre Campbell-LB Atlanta Falcons
Campbell picked up one tackle in the Falcons third preseason game. He has his roster sport secured and continues to battle for a starting spot.
100 % Chance To Make The Final 53-Man Roster
KJ Maye-WR New York Giants
Maye played in the third preseason game for the Giants, but did not appear to record any stats. The Giants then cut him Tuesday afternoon.
10% 5% 0% Chance To Make The Final 53-Man Roster
Peter Mortell- P Green Bay Packers
Mortell has a good preseason matching incumbent Packers punter Tim Masthay punt for punt, but apparently was just not consistent enough in practice and was cut by Green Bay. He did look good enough in the Packers three games that hopefully he will get a look from another team who may not be happy with their punter, if not in camp possibly early in the season.
40 % 55% 0% Chance To Make The Final 53-Man Roster
Theiran Cockran--DE Minnesota Vikings
Cockran played only three snaps in the Vikings three preseason games and was cut by the Vikings.
2% 0% Chance To Make The Final 53-Man Roster
Next is the class of 2015:
Maxx Williams-TE Baltimore Ravens
Maxx is nursing an injury and did not play in the Ravens third preseason game. His spot on the roster was nearly guaranteed however when presumed starting tight end Ben Watson tore his Achilles tendon and will miss the entire season. All the Ravens tight ends are beat up at the moment but the starting job is there for the taking for Maxx if he can get healthy and produce.
90 % 100% Chance To Make The Final 53-Man Roster
Damien Wilson--LB Dallas Cowboys
Wilson recorded two tackles in the Cowboys third preseason game. He appears to be winning himself back into favor and his chances to make the team look better than they did a week ago.
90 % 65% 80% Chance To Make The Final 53-Man Roster
Cedric Thompson-S New England Patriots
Thompson looked good in the Patriots opener recording two solo tackles and combining for another two. He did not show up in the stats for the second preseason game Thursday night though. He was unfortunately cut before the third preseason game as the Patriots safety depth is just took strong.
5 % 0% Chance To Make The Final 53-Man Roster
David Cobb--RB Tennessee Titans
Cobb had two carries for just one yard in the third preseason game for Tennessee. Apparently he’s not in their plans as Cobb was cut Tuesday afternoon.
55 % 0% Chance To Make The Final 53-Man Roster
Issac Fruechte--WR Minnesota Vikings
Fruechte didn’t record any stats in the Vikings third preseason game and will need to hope he gets added to the Vikings practice squad again. He will stick around for preseason game #4 at least.
2 % Chance To Make The Final 53-Man Roster
The older guys round out the rest:
Ra'Shede Hageman--DE Atlanta Falcons
Hageman picked up half of a tackle in the Falcons third preseason game. He continues to transition to playing defensive end in the NFL, and should make the final roster but will need to compete for playing time.
100 % 90% Chance To Make The Final 53-Man Roster
Marqueis Gray--TE Miami Dolphins
Gray played in the third preseason game for Miami but did not record any stats. His chances of making the roster are looking up as Miami cut one of the two other players he was competing with for the third TE spot on the Dolphins.
30 % 15% 50% Chance To Make The Final 53-Man Roster
Brock Vereen-DB-- New England Patriots Kansas City Chiefs
Vereen had a decent debut with the Chiefs making two solo tackles and combining for a third in his first preseason game. He still has an uphill battle to climb, especially with the news that KC finally has officially resigned Eric Berry to a one-year franchise contract deal.
10 % 2% 8% Chance To Make The Final 53-Man Roster
Eric Decker--WR New York Jets
Decker caught a TD from Ryan Fitzpatrick in the Jets third preseason game. He will once again be the most notable Gopher in the NFL this season.
1000000000 % Chance To Make The Final 53-Man Roster
Troy Stoudermire--WR Minnesota Vikings
Stoudermire returned one punt for ten yards in the Vikings third preseason game. Then he was cut Tuesday afternoon.
3 % 0% Chance To Make The Final 53-Man Roster
Marcus Sherels--CB/PR Minnesota Vikings
Sherels returned one kick off for 20 yards in the Vikings third preseason game. He still seems like a lock to make the final 53-man roster.
90 % 100% Chance To Make The Final 53-Man Roster
Tramaine Brock-CB San Francisco 49ers
Brock recorded a tackle and a half in the 49ers third preseason game. He will start for the 49ers this fall.
100 % Chance To Make The Final 53-Man Roster
We started with 18 former Gophers on NFL training camp rosters and are down to 12. It looks like at least another few are in battles to try and make the final 53-man rosters. We will have one final update before Week 1 of the NFL season begins a week from Thursday.
