(*Editor's note...What the heck does "Commitment to Eight" mean? It is our new recurring title for recruit commitments referencing a commitment to work towards the Gopher's Eighth National Championship.)
A Missouri commit has switched his intentions for where he plans to play football and Rey Estes has decided to join Coach Fleck in Minnesota. The Gophers have an incredibly athletic kid in Estes who has some position flexibility, but ultimately he is a play maker (just watch his film below).
From East Saint Louis, IL, Estes has been a Missouri commit but was likely to be flipping...Illinois was the likely destination till P.J. Fleck was hired in Minnesota.

I’m already in love with Estes simply because he put a pic of the Gophers getting Floyd in his commitment Tweet!
Quotables
GopherIllustrated ($cout) analysis of Estes
Athletic quarterback who has also played basketball. Has a quick release. Ball has good velocity, particularly short and intermediate and he can get the ball down field too. Plays in a pretty wide open offense, so has learned to make quick reads and scan the field. Not a big kid, must add some bulk.
The Bottom Line from his ESPN Recruiting Eval
Right now Estes is still growing and developing. Can be a sandlot player at times, but you also see real flashes of bright upside. Is not a player that will consistently wow you with his physical traits, but will surprise you at times with his ability to run and throw with the occasional spectacular play. Is a constant factor with his feet to break contain and keep plays alive which makes him dangerous on the perimeter. Makes a lot of plays for this offense and is a great fit for the spread offense that wants the quarterback to be a part of the running game.
Measurables
Height: 6' 0"
Weight: 160 lbs.
Were this kid an inch or two taller, he’d have a much longer offer list from helmet schools.

TDG Analysis
In Two Words - if you have to remember just two things about this player...
- Play-maker
- Quick
Absurd Comparisons
Read on message board where he was compared to Antwaan Randle El, let me tell you that guy was incredible in college. Estes has that smaller size with incredible quickness and the ability to make plays that turn into points.
Scheme Fit
Estes is coming to the program with an opportunity to play quarterback, but very likely will move to the secondary eventually.
Impact on Other Prospects
Well we need DBs in this class so adding any more won’t be a problem really. Where this pick up may have a bigger impact is on helping us to flip a teammate of his. Jeff Thomas is a 4-star WR commit to Miami. Chances are rather slim, but you never know.
