Gopher Football hosted at least 14 recruits over the weekend on official recruiting visits. Most of the 14 were already committed to the new coaching staff with a few key kids they are hoping to get committed.
But the recruiting world is not a friendly one and while P.J. Fleck is working hard to fill up his 2017 recruiting class, other schools are trying to coerce kids who had previously committed to the Tracy Claeys staff that they should look elsewhere.
At the time of typing this the Gophers gained 2 important recruits and lost two others over the weekend. Here is a very brief recap.
Recruits Gained
S - Kendarian Handy-Holly (Commit to Eight profile) - A 4-star kid who was vigorously recruited by Jay Sawvell when he was still on staff here and a kid who Fleck targeted as one who was a priority. Handy-Holly finally visited and gave his verbal pledge this weekend.
DB - Adam Beck (Commit to Eight profile) - 3-star recruit who was previously committed to Texas Tech. Beck is a Texas kid who decided to take his talents north. Tall and rangy defensive back who seems like a good fit at free safety but has the versatility to play corner or nickle too.
Recruits Lost
LB - Bryson Jackson (Commit to Eight profile) - a linebacker prospect that I was quite excited about has decided to play for Baylor rather than the Gophers.
Pending Decisions
More will be lost or gained in the coming days, here is a brief summation
CB - Trey Creamer (Commit to Eight profile) - another kid that I really liked in this particular class and it hurts just a little more because he is flipping to Iowa.
CB - Raheem Layne (Commit to Eight profile) - a Florida corner who has been committed to the Gophers since early November and he seems to be wavering on that commitment. He appears to be trending in the negative direction after visiting Wake Forest this weekend. And who is the new Defensive Coordinator at Wake? Jay Sawvell.
DT - Kevin Kegler - Visited Gophers this weekend and will make his decision soon.
DE - Boye Mafe - Hopkins kid who is deciding between Gophers and Rutgers after visiting Minnesota this weekend.
WR - Jafar Armstrong - Missouri commit who visited over the weekend. Has not announced that he’ll be flipping to Minnesota yet, but worth keeping an eye on.
