(*Editor's note...What the heck does "Commitment to Eight" mean? It is our new recurring title for recruit commitments referencing a commitment to work towards the Gopher's Eighth National Championship. )

Trenton Guthrie is a Michigan native and one of the Western Michigan de-commits who are now Golden. It wasn’t just offensive players who jumped from the Broncos to the Gophers with Coach Fleck.

Quotables

Ryan Burns of GopherIllustrated ($cout).

"Well coach Fleck is always very energetic, and he let out a big yell when I told him I wanted to commit," Guthrie explained to GI. "We are both pretty pumped. We've been building this relationship for a year so it's nice to be able to go with him. I'm very excited to meet the players on the team and I know they'll love their new coach as much as I do. What made me what to commit sight unseen to Minnesota was coach Fleck's culture. He's the coach that I've chosen to invest in, and they are going to be there, so it's going to be elite at Minnesota.”

TDG Analysis

In Two Words - if you have to remember just two things about this player...

  • Relentless
  • Tough

Absurd Comparisons

Guthrie was typically playing in a stance at DE in his video and was just relentless getting into the backfield. He was sneaky explosive but that didn’t really stand out, it was that he’d get a guy in his way but just continued to pursue and make noise in the backfield. Reminds me a bit of Nate Triplett in that he’s always around the ball despite not being the best athlete on the field.

Scheme Fit

The kid had a great senior season with 11 sacks and 26 TFLs. Expect that he’ll be a LB/DE who is tasked with getting in the backfield.

Impact on Other Prospects?

I really like Bryson Jackson who was a Claeys commit and I hope that we see him sticking around. Last year’s freshmen linebackers are awfully talented and adding a couple more in this class should give us options.
