Amir Coffey named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

This is the second time Coffey has earned the honor this season.

It’s a morning of great news for Minnesota Basketball. First, the Gophers earn their first Top 25 ranking since 2013 (#24 in the AP Poll) and now Amir Coffey has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time this season!

Via GopherSports:

Coffey led the team in scoring in both victories at Northwestern on Thursday and at home against Ohio State Sunday night. Against the Wildcats, the Hopkins, Minn., native scored 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including a career-high three 3-pointers. He added four rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block in the 70-66 victory in Evanston.

In Sunday’s 78-68 win over the Buckeyes, Coffey poured in 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting, adding five assists and four rebounds in 34 minutes of action.

The Big Ten’s player of the week was Caleb Swannigan (who had an average week by his standards), earned his 4th B1G PotW honor. He’s won nearly 50% of the 9 B1G PotW awards given with only 8 more to hand out. It’s looking pretty likely he’ll be Big Ten player of the year.
