Minnesota Football: Big Ten Football Power Rankings—Week 7

Rutgers wins the futility bowl and the top teams keep rolling on

NCAA Football: Rutgers at Illinois
We’re #13!!
Mike Granse-USA TODAY Sports

Congrats Rutgers, you have officially earned not dead last status. Indiana almost pulled off a crazy upset, but then remembered they were Indiana in overtime. And the top teams kept on keeping on.

As a reminder I rank the teams both 1-7 in their respective divisions, and then 1-14 overall in the Big Ten.

Here are my Week 7 Big Ten Football Power Rankings;

Big Ten East:

1. Penn State Nittany Lions

Penn State enjoyed their bye week by moving up to #2 in the nation and watching lots of other top teams lose. They now host Michigan in Happy Valley in prime time on ABC Saturday night. Gameday is in town and its a White Out. Its gonna be lit...

2. Ohio State Buckeyes

Ho hum..just another 56-14 win in Lincoln. OSU has now outscored its opponents 174-28 in its last three conference games. They now get a bye this week before the biggest game of their season next week when PSU comes to town.

3. Michigan State Spartans

Michigan State didn’t look great in beating the Gophers, but it looks like they got their run game figured out again. Good for them, not so good for their opponents. Indiana comes to town to see if they can beat this Michigan school since they blew their chance against the other.

4. Michigan Wolverines

Michigan is finally showing signs of struggling after losing a ton of players last year. They almost lost in overtime at Indiana, but the Hoosiers suddenly forgot to play defense in OT and the Wolverines squeaked out a win. Going to be a LOT tougher this week in White Out conditions. .

5. Indiana Hoosiers

To quote the immortal Adam Sandler:

Enjoy that trip to East Lansing.

6. Maryland Terrapins

Northwestern came to town and left with a win. This week you have to go to Wisconsin. Me thinks its time to turtle....

7. Rutgers Scarlet Knights

YOU AREN’T THE WORST TEAM IN THE BIG TEN ANYMORE!!! THANKS LOVIE!!!

Purdue comes to town in what originally looked like the battle for last, but now just looks like a Boiler ass-kicking.

Big Ten West

1. Wisconsin Badgers

Purdue gave the Badgers their toughest game of the season yet in the pouring rain at Camp Randall, but Wisconsin still got the win. Maryland this week—much more of a cakewalk.

2. Iowa Hawkeyes

Iowa enjoyed bye week and now goes to Northwestern in a game that looked a lot more interesting about 6 weeks ago. Now its just a 11 am divisional game.

3. Purdue Boilermakers

Purdue put forth a good effort but couldn’t pull off the upset in Madison. They get rewarded with a trip to Rutgers this week though.

4. Northwestern Wildcats

Northwestern got their fairly easy win against Maryland and now hows Iowa in another arguably winnable game...but will they?

5. Nebraska Cornhuskers

Back to back big losses for Nebraska, but can;t really fault them for getting smoked by Ohio State. Bye week in Lincoln...will Riley be back for their next game?

6. Minnesota Golden Gophers

The Gophers stuck for three quarters, but appeared to maybe find something in the 4th? If they struggle with Illinois this week then this could be ugly.

7. Illinois Fighting Illini

Illinois is the worst team in the Big Ten. Rutgers beat up on the Illini last week and it wasn’t that close. Can Minnesota do the same this week?

Big Ten Teams Ranked 1-14

  1. Penn State Nittany Lions (Previously #1)
  2. Ohio State Buckeyes (#2)
  3. Wisconsin Badgers (#3)
  4. Michigan State Spartans (#4)
  5. Michigan Wolverines (#5)
  6. Iowa Hawkeyes (#6)
  7. Purdue Boilermakers (#7)
  8. Northwestern Wildcats (#8)
  9. Indiana Hoosiers (#10)
  10. Nebraska Cornhuskers (#9)
  11. Maryland Terrapins (#8)
  12. Minnesota Gophers (#10)
  13. Rutgers Scarlet Knights (#13)
  14. Illinois Fighting Illini (#14)
