Strolling Through Twitterland: Farewell Edition

Thanks for reading everyone!

NCAA Football: Nebraska at Minnesota Jesse Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

This has been one of the most challenging seasons I can remember as a Gopher fan, which is saying something considering everything we have been through with this program. But it actually had nothing to do with how the team played. I am more hopeful for this program than I have ever been before. Almost all of the excuses for why Minnesota can’t win are gone. They have a beautiful newer on-campus stadium. New practice facilities. A competitive budget. A President and Athletic Director committed to winning, plus one of the hottest up-and-coming coaches in the business. I know it doesn’t seem like it after yesterday but the future has never been brighter for this program than it is right now. Trust the process!

So why has it been one of the most challenging seasons? It’s because of the challenges we’ve faced as fans. The division among us this season was hard on me. Even during the leanest of seasons, I couldn’t wait to watch my Gophers play. Minnesota fans have a common bond among ourselves with our shared experiences. We have been through a lot together. We’ve been through the highs of upsetting #2 ranked Penn State in Happy Valley, through the lows of losing to South Dakota. Ok, there have been more lows than highs but those lows are what made for such a tight bond. I don’t know about you but those bonds helped create some of the friendships I hold dearest to my heart.

Through it all we had one common denominator and that was our joint hatred for Iowa and Wisconsin. Minnesota fans have always had differences, but for me, something changed this season. Strolling through Twitterland every week brought me low. For the first time in my life, Gopher football has stopped being enjoyable. I have come to realize the past few weeks that it is time for me to step aside for a bit. It is time for me to sign-off and decompress. I may or may not be back, time will tell on that.

But before I sign off I want to leave you all with this message. We are all in this together! We all want to see this program succeed and we’ll always have differing opinions about what that means. But at end of the day, the bonds we have as Gophers fans, the friendships that have been forged in maroon and gold colored blood and the time spent with family cheering on the team is what being a Gopher football fan is truly about! Never forget that.

Thank you everyone for reading and commenting the past three years. I hope I have brought some enjoyment into your lives. I’ll see you on the flip side Gopher fans!
