The Big Ten announced the All-Big Ten Defense and Special Teams members on Tuesday and Minnesota Golden Gophers sophomore linebacker Thomas Barber was named to the Third Team All-Big Ten by the media. No other Gophers made any of the three teams selected by either the media or the coaches.
Minnesota did have several honorable mention selections as defensive linemen Carter Coughlin and Steven Richardson were both named honorable mention by the coaches and the media, and Barber was named an honorable mention by the coaches. Richardson was named to the third team by both the media and coaches a season ago as the Gophers only defensive member.
No Gophers made any of the three All-Big Ten Special Teams but both kicker Emmit Carpenter and punter Ryan Santoso were named honorable mention by both the media and the coaches. Carpenter was named to the first team by the media and second team by the coaches in winning the Big Ten Kicker of the Year Award in 2016.
Minnesota senior Jonathan Celestin was the Gophers nominee for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
The full All-Big Ten Defensive and Special Teams players are listed below in the tweets. The Big Ten will reveal the All-Big Ten offense on Wednesday, and the individual awards on Thursday.
