Scouting Report
Notice all the Power 5 offers? Well it appeared Sapp would have no shortage of choices until he tore his ACL twice, once as a sophomore and again as a junior. It was then that some of those previous scholarship offers became “non-committable.” As a senior, he opted to sit out most of the season to repair cartilage in that same knee. For P.J. Fleck and the Gophers, the reward is obviously greater than the risk. The son of former NFL defensive back Benny Sapp, he is an elite cornerback when healthy. It’s difficult to evaluate him since he hasn’t played a full season since his freshman year, but Sapp could be a huge steal for Minnesota.
Potential Impact
Considering the health concerns surrounding his knee, Sapp is a safe bet to redshirt this fall. Entering his redshirt freshman season at Minnesota, he’ll have sat out almost two full years, which could go a long way towards keeping his knee healthy.
