Scouting Report
Spann-Ford played wide receiver and defensive back for St. Cloud Tech, but will play tight end for the Gophers. Under offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca, tight ends haven’t been utilized much as receivers, but Spann-Ford would represent a mismatch nightmare for opposing defenses. He has the length to high point the ball and come down with contested catches, but also boasts the speed and athleticism to change direction and adjust to passes. Spann-Ford will need to add strength for blocking at the college level and there will be an adjustment to playing on the ball as a tight end, but there is a lot of potential as a playmaker on offense.
Potential Impact
The Gophers lose both Brandon Lingen and Nate Wozniak to graduation, so it will be interesting to see who fills the void at tight end. I suspect Spann-Ford will end up redshirting this fall, but the opportunity for playing time is there if he can step up and emerge as a much-needed red zone threat in the passing game. He certainly has the size and hands to fulfill that role.
