Scouting Report
Aune is a freak athlete. The area of his game that needs to improve the most is his ability to diagnose plays. He doesn’t yet possess the instincts to locate the football and can often find himself out of position, as a result.
Potential Impact
Aune has drawn comparisons to current Minnesota linebacker Blake Cashman. It is expected that he’ll start out at safety before eventually transitioning to linebacker. He certainly has the athleticism and versatility to do so. The biggest obstacle to that is the lack of scholarship safeties on the roster. Depending on whether redshirt freshman Adam Beck is at cornerback or safety this fall, Minnesota could have as few as four scholarship players at the safety position, including Aune. In an ideal situation, I don’t think he’d see the field this fall, but injuries could force the staff to get creative.
