Scouting Report
Okonji is an elite athlete who has been proven himself against some of the better high school competition in the state of Georgia. He has tremendous speed off the edge, and can play at the line of scrimmage with his hand in the dirt or standing up.
Potential Impact
The Gophers are thin at the defensive end position, which necessitated shifting Carter Coughlin from linebacker to rush end last season. I expect they’ll allow Coughlin to return to his original position now that there is an influx of young defensive ends, including Okonji. The opportunity to contribute early in his career will certainly be there, but it all depends on how he performs in fall camp. The Gophers were undersized at defensive end last season, which did not work out well against the run, so they are in desperate need of someone who can set the edge.
