Scouting Report

We know one thing: Smith is fast. This was made clear when he ran a 20.84 second 200 meter dash at the Georgia Region 8AAAAAAA meet, which was the fifth fastest outdoor time recorded this year. Think former Gopher cornerback Jalen Myrick but with a few more inches on his height. He is a tall cover corner who is smooth in coverage and isn’t afraid to go up and fight for the ball. Smith has talked about wanting to be the press coverage cornerback who takes on the opposing team’s best wide receiver, so he certainly has no shortage of confidence.

Potential Impact

Smith has talked about wanting to play as a freshman, but Minnesota returns six scholarship cornerbacks, including Florida transfer Chris Williamson and redshirt freshman Rey Estes. Based on word of mouth, the coaching staff is very high on Estes. Senior Antonio Shenault and redshirt sophomore Kiondre Thomas, last season’s starting cornerbacks, both return, as well. It all depends on how Smith performs in fall camp, but don’t be surprised if he sees the field.
