We’ve just witnessed something that hasn’t happened for 20 years.
The NCAA would try to convince you that it hasn’t happened for even longer, but we know what we saw during the winter of 1997. What am I referring to? Minnesota going through the month of February without a Big Ten loss.
There are many things that have me excited right now. Minnesota is headed back to the NCAA tournament. They have a good shot at finishing in the Top 4 of the Big Ten for the first time in over a decade. But this fantastic February holds a special spot in my Gopher loving heart. For too long February has been the month where the Gophers folded. Best case, it was a month when the Minnesota muddled through. For nearly two thirds of my life this is a month of despair, not unbridled joy. No longer.
There is still so much left to play for. With any luck, there are more lengthy streaks to be broken. But no matter what happens the rest of the year, I for one am excited that I get to look back at this February and smile at the run the Minnesota Golden Gophers put together.
