NCAA Hockey Tournament 2017 - Minnesota headed to Manchester

The Gophers are the #1 seed and will play Notre Dame

The Gophers are headed to Manchester, NH as the #1 seed.

The Minnesota Gophers were awarded the #1 seed in the Northeast Regional in Manchester, New Hampshire Sunday morning. The Gophers will play Notre Dame in a first round game Saturday at 2:30 PM and the winner will advance to play the winner of UMass-Lowell and Cornell on Sunday for a trip to the NCAA Frozen Four.

The Gophers thought they had let their chance at a #1 seed slip away Friday night after losing in double overtime to Penn State in the Big Ten Tournament semifinal. However the other teams competing for the last #1 seed could not get the job done. Western Michigan lost twice in the NCHC Tournament, Boston University lost in the Hockey East Semifinals, and UMass-Lowell just could not quite catch the Gophers in RPI after Penn State defeated Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship Game.

The Gophers will play Notre Dame in the first round. Minnesota most recently played the Irish in November of 2015 where the two teams spit a series in South Bend. The teams will be seeing a lot more of one another starting next year when Notre Dame officially joins the Big Ten Hockey Conference.

The Gophers played in Manchester in the 2015 NCAA Tournament where as the #3 seed they lost 4-1 to #2 seed UMD.
