Minnesota Golden Gophers defensive lineman Gaelin Elmore has announced that he will transfer from the University of Minnesota after graduating this spring. He put out a very thoughtful and in depth announcement that addresses his teammates, coaches, and fans that I recommend everyone check out.

While this is a bummer from the football side of things, we’d like to congratulate Gaelin on his upcoming graduation and wish him the best of luck wherever he goes next.

What does this mean in football terms?

This isn’t the best of news. Elmore was a likely starter and while he wasn’t an impactful presence on the level of fellow defensive lineman Steven Richardson (Gaelin isn’t a tackle, but you get my drift) you never want to lose a starter to transfer. Minnesota’s defensive line depth will also take a hit, which creates more uncertainty for this group coming into Fleck’s first year.

Why is he transferring?

I’m not going to speculate on Gaelin’s reasons. He kept those to himself and I’m happy to respect that.

TL;DR

Gaelin Elmore, a likely starter at defensive end is transferring after graduation this spring. This will hurt Minnesota’s depth at the position where they don’t return a lot of experience.
