Ahmad Gilbert will transfer from the team according to a team source. The sophomore played rarely throughout the season, and it had been clear for awhile that he was unlikely to play even rotational minutes next season.
#Gophers sophomore forward Ahmad Gilbert is transferring, per a team release. Gilbert averaged 1.7 points and played 5.0 minutes this season— Marcus R. Fuller (@Marcus_R_Fuller) March 28, 2017
The transfer decision opens up another scholarship for the 2017 class, which if used will likely be given to a low post player who can provide depth. Minnesota has reportedly expressed interest in Clifton Moore, who recently decommitted from Indiana following the firing of Tom Crean.
It is also entirely possible that Minnesota will bank the scholarship to have another ready for a stacked 2018 recruiting class.
Gilbert will have two years of eligibility remaining at his next destination.
