The Big Ten has announced their 2016-17 awards and the Gopher’s Reggie Lynch has earned himself the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Year.
Hats off to the Gopher’s center who dominated the Big Ten paint blocking 101 shots and altering countless more. Despite often being in foul trouble, he still managed to earn the league’s top defensive honor.
More than just blocking shots, Lynch changed the Gopher defense and allowed the perimeter defenders to guard three-point shooters more closely. The Gopher defense led the Big Ten in defensive 3-pnt FG% by a lot, and much of that was due to Lynch being there to defend the rim on penetration.
Lynch is the first Gopher to receive this award since 2002, won by Travarus Bennett!
