In case you haven’t been paying attention, the Minnesota Softball team is currently ranked #5 in the nation with a 38-3 record! Minnesota is 11-1 in the Big Ten with a one game lead on both Michigan and Illinois in the Big Ten Standings. The Gophers head to Madison for a midweek doubleheader against the Badgers on Wednesday that will be broadcast live on BTN at 1:00pm CT!
Minnesota will be looking for revenge against Wisconsin after the Badgers swept Minnesota last season in their doubleheader. Those two losses kept Minnesota from winning the Big Ten Regular Season Championship a year ago. With only a one game lead in the standings currently, Minnesota knows these two games will be important.
Minnesota comes into the doubleheader hot on a nine game winning streak. They are outscoring their opponents this season 297-71. They rank second in the nation with 1.88 doubles per game, fourth in the nation with 7.24 runs per game, fifth in the nation with a .436 on base percentage, sixth in the nation with a .344 batting average and a.545 slugging percentage and seventh in the nation with a 1.37 team ERA.
One reason for the low team ERA is the play of star senior Sara Groenewegen. This season Groenewegen has a record of 19-2 with a 0.63 ERA and has recorded 168 strikeouts. She was recently named a top-25 finalist for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award and earned her third B1G Pitcher of the Week honor of the season. She easily is the leader at this point for the Big Ten Player of the Yeah, and should definitely be considered for National Player of the Year.
Groenewegen was also named a top-10 finalist for the Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must be classified as NCAA Division I seniors and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. You can vote once per day for Groenewegen HERE
So take the afternoon off of work and go watch some softball. Or, if you can;t get off of work, steal some bandwith and watch on BTN2GO. You can watch the games starting at 1:00 PM HERE.
