I'm a fan of the Minnesota Gophers because I'm a front-runner who only roots for WINNERS! said no Minnesota Gopher fan ever...
I am definitely a Combo.
Geography – My parents grew up in Northern MN, got married, and moved to Minneapolis, where I lived until I was 6. Then we moved to CO, CT, NY (for two or less years) before finally moving to the Phoenix area when I was in 6th grade. This being the early 80s, Phoenix only had one professional team, and given that I had very limited time in the other cities, and my entire extended family (grand parents, cousins, aunts uncles etc.) still lived and lives to this day in Minnesota, rooting for the Minnesota teams was what we did. My father was a UofM alum, and when it came time for me to go to college, I chose the UofM because I hated the weather in Phoenix and Minneapolis seemed to be the opposite end of the meteorological spectrum.
Relationships – Most importantly, I met my wife the night of the 1999 NFCCG (that's a story for another time) and realized that we were both graduate students at the UofM which is really why we got together initially.
Alumni – I graduated from the UofM for graduate school (as an undergrad I ended up transferring to Arizona State after a few years but that, again, is a story for another time, think Animal House.) My grandmother, Father, Mother in Law and wife are all alumni as well.
Experience – My freshman year at Minnesota was one of the best years of my life. We often went to basketball games. This was Clem's first year and the teams were bad, but the games were so fun. We also make the hike across the bridge to the Metrodome to watch the Gopher football team, where the venue and teams were not so great, but the game experience was so fun. I think that sums up being a Minnesota Gophers fan; the results may not be spectacular, but geing a fan is enjoyable and something I'll never give up. When they turn the corner and start dominating in EVERYTHING, I don't want to miss is.
