The Minnesota Softball team clinched the outright Regular Season Big Ten Championship with a 14-1 win over Penn State on Saturday. It’s the Gophers first Regular Season Big Ten Championship since 1991. Minnesota also clinched the #1 overall seed in the Big Ten Tournament next weekend at Michigan. The win also moved the Gophers record to 50-3 on the season, and continued to extend both the school; record for wins in a season, and the Gophers consecutive win record which now sits at 21 consecutive victories.
The Minnesota Golden Gophers had to wait out a 30 minute rain delay, but they wasted no time getting to work after the false start. Minnesota batted around and scored six runs in the top of the first inning. Centerfielder Dani Wagner had the big bat for the Gophers going 3-3 with two home runs and a double. First baseman Sydney Dwyer knocked in her 71st run of the year on a single in the second inning. Coming into Saturday, she was tied for first in the country in RBI.
Freshman Amber Fiser got the start and went three innings giving up just two hits and a run in raising her record on the season to 13-0. Carlie Brandt came in for the last two innings and shut down the Nittany Lions.
Minnesota will complete the Big Ten Regular Season with one last game at Penn State on Sunday before the Big Ten Tournament next weekend in Ann Arbor.
Congrats to the Gophers!!
