It just got easier to be a Purdue fan. No, that isn’t an oxymoron. Purdue University just approved the sale of alcohol at football and basketball games throughout the general seating areas (minus a little bit of work to control access in the student sections).
Beer, wine and liquor have been available at Ross-Ade in premium seating sections and suites since 2003, while beer and wine have been sold on the South End Zone Patio since 2015. In Mackey, beer, wine and liquor have been available in club spaces since 2011.
“We had extensive discussions with campus police and safety and security, and what we learned is that our fans have responded very favorably to being able to purchase beer and wine on the South End Zone Patio,” Purdue vice president and athletics director Mike Bobinski said. “The atmosphere in the South End Zone is very positive, and there have been fewer alcohol-related incidents on gamedays since its inception. As a result, in an attempt to further enhance our gameday experience and provide an additional amenity for our fans, we believe the time is right to offer this expanded opportunity.
Per the fine folks at Hammer & Rails, this does mean you’ll lose the ability to exit and reenter the football games. That seems like a small price to pay for the ability to purchase (hopefully) celebratory brews when you head to West Lafayette to watch the Minnesota Gophers this fall. Here’s hoping they make sure to carry 3 Floyds!
