Well this was unexpected. The Minnesota Vikings announced Sunday morning that they had waived linebacker Darnell Sankey and signed former Minnesota Golden Gophers quarterback Mitch Leidner to a contract.

Leidner obviously is in town and is participating in practice and meetings today.

It is assumed that Leidner was signed to play quarterback, and he would be the fifth qb currently on the Vikings 90-man roster after Sam Bradford, Case Keenum, Taylor Heincke, and Teddy Bridgewater. He most likely is just a practice body and may see some time in the final two preseason games for the Vikings, but it would take a major injury to one of the three quarterbacks not named Bridgewater ahead of him on the roster to see Mitch end up on the final 53-man roster.
Leidner now joins wide receiver Issac Fruechte and cornerback/punt returner Marcus Sherels as former Gophers on the Vikings roster.
We’ll let you discuss this in the comments. I can only assume they will be interesting.
