Minnesota Basketball: Previewing Penn State

Once upon a time this was a winnable game. Not anymore.

NCAA Basketball: Northwestern at Penn State Matthew O'Haren-USA TODAY Sports

The Gophers got blown out at home by Purdue in the second-worst loss ever at Williams Arena. That’s saying something! The team has basically given up, which is a shame, especially since Nate Mason is ending his career on such a sour note.

Penn State isn’t great, and this would’ve been a winnable game in brighter times. Alas, we’re looking at another L as the Gophers open up a 2.5-game road trip that’s sure to be a bloodbath.

Essentials:

Who are the Gophers playing?

Penn State Nittany Lions (13-6, 3-3)

What time are they playing?

Mon., Jan. 15 @ 6pm CT

Where are they playing?

Bryce Jordan Center

Can I watch the game on TV?

Yes, BTN.

Can I listen to the game on the radio?

Yes, 100.3 KFAN.

Days until next season:

298

Gopher basketball memory that doesn’t suck:

On Feb. 5, 2005, Vincent Grier scored 26 of his career-high 32 points after halftime to lead the Gophers to a 60-50 victory over the 19th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers.

#GopherHaiku for the game:

One hour ahead.

But in the Eastern time zone,

Hope still evades us.

Prediction

KenPom likes Penn State by six, 78-72. That still seems generous. Expect the Lions to roll by at least 10 unless Minnesota shows something resembling a pulse.
