The redshirt freshman wide receiver will no longer be a two-sport athlete as he switches focus to baseball

Redshirt freshman wide receiver Drew Hmielewski is leaving the football program to focus solely on playing baseball for Minnesota. Previously, he had been a two-sport athlete for the Gophers.

Last season, Hmielewski did not record a reception but did return five punts.

His departure from the program is the latest blow to the Gophers’ receiving corps. Redshirt junior Melvin Holland, Jr., junior Rashad Still, and redshirt sophomore Hunter Register have all transferred this offseason. Junior-to-be Tyler Johnson will represent the lone upperclassman scholarship wide receiver next season. Six of their nine scholarship wide receivers will be true or redshirt freshmen.
