Minnesota Football: Carter Coughlin and Blake Cashman named All-B1G Defense

Just two members of the Gopher defense were recognized by the Big Ten coaches and media

The Big Ten has announced the defensive All-Big Ten selections for 2018. Carter Coughlin has been named as a unanimous selection to the second-team All-Big Ten. Blake Cashman was named second-team All-Big Ten by the media and third-team by the coaches.

Coughlin tied for the Big Ten lead in sacks with 9.5, matching Iowa defensive ends A.J. Epenesa and Anthony Nelson. He tied with Blake Cashman for fourth in the Big Ten in tackles for loss with 15, behind Michigan State’s Kenny Willekes, Penn State’s Yetur Gross-Matos, and Iowa’s A.J. Epenesa. The junior rush end also led the Big Ten with four forced fumbles.

Cashman led the Gopher defense in tackles with 104, and tied with Purdue’s Markus Bailey and Wisconsin’s T. J. Edwards for fifth on the Big Ten leaderboard for total tackles. He tied with Carter Coughlin for fourth in the Big Ten in tackles for loss with 15. The former walk-on also broke up five passes and forced one fumble that he recovered and returned for a touchdown.

The Big Ten will announce the selections for All-Big Ten offense tomorrow at 4 p.m. CT.
