Scouting Report
Brown is as versatile a defensive back as you’re going to find, and I am sure that is part of the appeal for Fleck and defensive backs coach Jahmile Addae. He is physical enough to be a safety — and likes to lower the boom — but also possesses the speed and quickness to succeed as a cornerback. I could also see the staff utilizing Brown at the nickel position. And there’s a sort of “lunch pail” mentality apparent from watching his film. There’s one play — and I’m surprised he included it at all — where he misses the tackle but then gets up and ends up chasing down the ball carrier from behind about 40 yards down the field.
Potential Impact
The Gophers have a solid core of cornerbacks returning next season, including sophomore Terell Smith, redshirt junior Kiondre Thomas, senior Coney Durr, and redshirt senior Chris Williamson. But with a lack of scholarship safeties and Antoine Winfield, Jr. returning from his second straight injury-shortened season, expect Minnesota defensive coordinator Joe Rossi to get creative in the defensive backfield. This is where Brown could factor in, as Rossi mixes and matches in the secondary with different players. He certainly has the tools to fit as a slot corner, where Williamson spent much of his playing time last season.
