The Minnesota Golden Gophers baseball team will begin the indoor portion of their 2018 indoor season Tuesday night when they host the North Dakota State Bison. They will follow that up with a home game Wednesday night against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, before their toughest test to date comes this weekend in the DQ Classic.
The Gophers are coming off of a 3-0 roadtrip at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida last weekend. The Gopher bats exploded for 46 runs in three games in wins over Boston College, Chicago State, and Mount St. Mary’s. Junior shortstop Terrin Vavra was named the Big Ten Player of the Week after batting .600 for the weekend. Vavra scored eight runs, knocked in six rbi, stole a pair of bases and recorded two triples just to top it off.
Their explosive weekend rocketed the Minnesota offense up the national rankings. The Gophers currently are eighth in the country with a 347 batting average and are eighth as well with 74 runs scored. Additionally the Gophers eight sacrifice flies rank them second in the nation.
Minnesota now returns home for two weeks to the cozy confines of US Bank Stadium. The Gophers will play their next ten games in their indoor home. Besides the pair of games against the Dakota schools, Minnesota will host the DQ Classic against a trio of Pac-12 teams this weekend that will give them their toughest test of the season to date.
This weekend will see the Washington Huskies, Arizona Wildcats, and the #11 ranked UCLA Bruins come to town. This year the DQ Classic will also be presented as the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge. The three Pac-12 schools will each play a game against the Gophers and two other Big Ten Schools—the Illinois Fighting Illini and the Michigan State Spartans. All of the games will take place Friday through Sunday at US Bank Stadium. All of the next ten Gopher games at US Bank Stadium can be watched on BTN Plus ($$).
