Minnesota Football Recruiting: JUCO linebacker Ahmad McCullough commits to the Gophers

McCullough fills gaps in linebacker classes and provides needed depth

Gopher Sports

Just hours after receiving a huge verbal commitment from Jason Bargy, the Gophers received another defensive verbal. This one came from JUCO linebacker, Ahmad McCullough just three days after being offered from PJ Fleck.

It is too early to know much about stars and recruit rankings for JUCO players, but McCullough will add athleticism and speed while filling in a need at linebacker. Linebacker is currently a strength of this Gopher defense but there is a pretty significant class gap after the likes of Thomas Barber, Carter Coughlin and Kamal Martin.

TDG Analysis

A Baltimore native who ended up spending the 2017 season at Hutchinson CC. His experience, position flexibility and eligibility will fit in nicely to backfill for the glut junior linebackers we currently have. There’s currently a gap with zero sophomore linebackers and 1 redshirt freshman linebacker. Adding a JUCO to this group is perfect to balance out the classes. On the field he is capable of adding some weight to play in the middle as well as having the athleticism to play on the outside if they want. McCullough is a nice addition to the 2019 class.

Deduction and speculation...McCullough was a 2017 recruit who went to Hutchinson CC. He’s not on the Hutchinson CC 2017 roster, I saw a tweet indicating he was a qualifier out of high school and his only hudl video is from spring practices. This leads me to believe that he redshirted last year at Hutchinson, and assuming all of the former is accurate he’ll play this fall for the Blue Dragons and will then have 3 years to play 3 at Minnesota. This is not confirmed.

Worth noting that McCullough’s brother signed with Kansas as a JUCO signee as part of the 2018 class.
