The Minnesota Golden Gophers men’s tennis team will take on the #3 seed Ohio State Buckeyes in the round of 16 in the NCAA Tennis Tournament on Friday. The Gophers and Buckeyes will try and advance to the round of eight which will take place on Sunday. The remainder of the NCAA Tournament will take place on the campus of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem North Carolina.

The Gophers will enter the round of 16 after back to back upset wins in the Norman, Oklahoma Regional. The #37 ranked Gophers defeated #19 Georgia in the first round by a 4-3 tally before sweeping the home #14 Oklahoma Sooners in the second round 4-0. The Gophers were led by #1 singles player Felix Corwin who upset two higher ranked players. Corwin is currently ranked #53 in the nation and is Minnesota’s only representative in the NCAA Singles Tournament that begins on Wednesday.

The Gophers will face off against Big Ten Champion Ohio State. The Buckeyes are the #3 overall seed in the tournament. They are 2-0 against the Gophers this season winning 5-2 at Minnesota in the Big Ten regular season and then 4-1 in Iowa City in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament. The Buckeyes have five players ranked in the top 112 in the country which makes them tough to defeat in singles matches.

It will be a tough task for Minnesota to continue to move on, but if they do they will play the winner of #6 Mississippi State and #11 Texas in the round of eight on Sunday.

The Gophers and Buckeyes will begin their match at 11 AM on Friday. You cna foolow the live stats of the match HERE.
