Former St. Cloud State defenseman and assistant coach Garrett Raboin has been hired as an assistant coach for new Gophers head coach Bob Motzko’s staff. The hire had been rumored for a bit but was confirmed on Wednesday by Eric Vegoe of The Athletic and was additionally confirmed by the Star Tribune.

It appears Raboin will be the only new assistant on Motzko’s staff as Gopher assistant Scott Bell will remain on Motzko’s staff for the 2018-19 season. Bell and former Gopher assistant Mike Guentzel were both under contract until the end of the 2018-19 season and would have been paid by the U of M regardless of their coaching status.

Raboin is a Detroit Lakes, Minnesota native (shoutout to GoAUpher). He played three seasons of junior hockey with the Lincoln Stars in the USHL before accepting a scholarship to St. Cloud State. Raboin was a leader for the Huskies. He was a three year captain and anchored the blue line. He scored 21 goals and 62 assists in 156 games between 2006-2010 for SCSU. After college, Raboin played two seasons in Finland and Norway before retiring as a player.

Motzko hired Raboin onto his staff at St. Cloud State where he had remained for six seasons before making the jump to Minnesota. It was reported in April that Raboin did not apply for the St. Cloud State head coaching job after Motzko left for Minnesota. Raboin told Mick Hatten of the St. Cloud Times at the time:

“At the end of the day, it was timing,” Raboin said of his decision. “I really, truly am having a blast in my current position.

”Professionally, I aspire to be a head coach. But the timing ... we’re about to have a third child in September. In the big picture, it just wasn’t the right time to pursue something like that.”

It can be assumed that Raboin will work with the Minnesota defensmen on the ice as he was one in college and replaces Mike Guentzel who did so with the Gophers in recent seasons.

Raboin, Motzko, Bell and the rest of their Gopher roster will begin the 2018-19 season on October 6th in Duluth against the defending NCAA Champions.
