Gopher Football: Vic Viramontes to transfer from Minnesota

His departure leaves the Gophers with one scholarship quarterback on the roster

Vic Viramontes, we hardly knew ye.

247 Sports is reporting that Viramontes will transfer from Minnesota after one semester with the program. He is expected to return to Riverside City College in California for the fall — which will reportedly include a position switch from quarterback to linebacker — before transferring to another four-year school in January.

We can only speculate at this point what motivated his decision to transfer, but Viramontes’ struggles during the spring likely contributed. Redshirt freshman Tanner Morgan emerged from spring practice as the clear frontrunner at quarterback, and there was a case to be made that freshman preferred walk-on Zack Annexstad outperformed Viramontes, as well.

It’s possible Viramontes saw the writing on the wall and, if the rumored position change is true, is hoping to catch on with another program at linebacker.

With the transfer of Demry Croft, the graduation of Conor Rhoda, Seth Green switching to tight end, and now this, the Gophers’ depth at quarterback is razor thin. Morgan represents the lone scholarship quarterback on the roster. Neither he or nor Annexstad has seen game action at the college level, so hold on to your butts this fall. It could be a bumpy ride.
