Minnesota Football Recruiting: Three-star WR Mike Brown-Stephens commits to the Gophers

Fleck and co. hope to have discovered a diamond in the rough with their latest wide receiver commitment

The Minnesota Golden Gophers have added another weapon to their arsenal, boosting their wide receiver corps with a verbal commitment from Ohio pass catcher Mike Brown-Stephens.

Lightly recruited up to this point, Brown-Stephens caught the attention of head coach P.J. Fleck at an Ohio satellite camp in June, which led to a scholarship offer shortly thereafter. With his lack of Power 5 scholarship offers, he is firmly an “under the radar” prospect at this point, but I’m inclined to trust the judgement of Fleck and wide receivers coach Matt Simon.

Scouting Report

At 5’10’’, 175 lbs., Brown-Stephens doesn’t have eye-popping measurables, and he isn’t what you’d consider a “burner,” running a 4.6 40. But there are other elements of his game that show promise. Brown-Stephens is a polished route runner, able to create separation without having to rely on speed to outrun defenders. He bursts off the line of scrimmage, wastes little movement, and possesses exceptional ball skills. There aren’t a bevy of highlight reel catches on his film, but that is in part a product of the space he is able to create. You’re not going to have to make a lot of contested catches if you’ve found a crease in the coverage.

The boat is nearly full now, with only a few oars remaining. Expect Fleck and co. to bring in a wide receiver, an offensive lineman, a defensive lineman, and a defensive back with the four remaining scholarships in this recruiting class (if all current commitments hold).
