Minnesota Football Recruiting: Three-star offensive lineman Tyler Cooper commits to the Gophers

The Wisconsin offensive guard has committed to become a member of the Minnesota Movers

P.J. Fleck and co. have received a verbal commitment from Wisconsin offensive lineman Tyler Cooper, who received an official scholarship offer on Saturday after months of keeping in contact with the Minnesota Golden Gophers’ coaching staff.

Scouting Report

What is most interesting to me about Cooper is that he spent his sophomore season at center before moving to tackle as a junior, but at the college level Fleck and co. want him at guard. So we’ll see if that affects where he plays as a senior, but the Gophers’ coaching staff certainly believe he has the build to be a road grader at guard. Cooper is a two-sport athlete with football and basketball, so there is no question he is athletic, but there are fundamentals as an offensive lineman that he’ll need to continue to develop (exploding off the ball, bending at the knee and not the waist, etc.). He certainly knows how to finish a block, which is clear from his film.

I know that I have the Gophers taking two offensive linemen, but I would not be surprised if a third climbs into the boat. The three remaining scholarships are very fluid, in my opinion. I expect them to take at least one more wide receiver, but we’ll see if defensive line and defensive back are where the other two scholarships will end up.

Not a lot of oars left.
