Who?
Tre’ Williams is one of four freshman joining the Minnesota Golden Gophers as part of the 2019-2020 recruiting class. He comes to the U from Wasatch Academy (Mount Pleasant, Utah) via Dallas, Texas after averaging 17 points and four assists during his senior season.
Williams, considered a combo guard, measures in at 6’5” and 195 pounds. He will sport the coveted #1 jersey this season for the Golden Gophers.
Fun Fact
High level basketball is family affair for Tre’ Williams. His sister, Jade, plays for Duke University and averaged 8.4 points and 5.4 rebounds as a sophomore last season. Tre’ also considers highly regarded Minnehaha Academy point guard Jalen Suggs a “cousin” and states “blood couldn’t make us any closer.”
What can we expect?
Williams possesses a wide range of skills on the basketball court. He has the ability to penetrate off the dribble and finish in traffic thanks to sufficient length and decent touch. Additionally, he can complement his aggressive tendencies with a respectable outside shot. Despite being an incoming freshman he was unafraid to seek out his offense during the team’s trip to Italy and will have a green light from distance all season.
In conjunction with his extensive offensive skill set, he also has a good motor and active hands on defense. While he is still learning some concepts as it pertains to team defense and the assignments that it entails, he has shown flashes of quality ball pressure and aggressive anticipation that should bode well for development on that side of the floor.
Tre’ should be an excellent addition to a deep rotation of guards, presumably primarily filling in at the two-spot with the ability to fill in at the three in a pinch. I’m personally really excited to see how Williams develops as the season goes on and can’t wait to see him heat it up from three.
