Gopher Basketball Lands 4-star PF, Martice Mitchell

Richard Pitino lands his first commitment to the 2020 class with a top 150 player

NCAA Basketball: Big Ten Media Day Quinn Harris-USA TODAY Sports

Chicago native, Martice Mitchell was on his official visit this past weekend and made his official announcement this evening that he is coming to Minnesota to be a Golden Gopher.

With a stacked class of local high school kids and a number of big-name out of market recruits, Mitchell is a name that kind of snuck on many who casually pay attention to Gopher basketball recruiting. But Mitchell is a 4-star power forward, ranked by 247.com as the 124th player in the country. And this is a commitment that we should be very excited about.

So who is Mitchell?

Martice Mitchell

Pos: Power Forward
Height: 6’10”
Weight: 190
High School: Chicago Heights (Bloom)
Other Offers: Rutgers, Xavier, Iowa, Maryland, Oregon

He is a kid who had a great summer on the AAU circuit and saw his stock rise dramatically. He visited Xavier earlier, was in town this past weekend along with Jamal Mashburn Jr. and will not be taking any other official visits.

Strengths appear to be that he is very smooth around the basket offensively. He has a smooth stroke shooting inside of 15 feet and he rebounds well with his long arms. Defensively he will develop into a nice shot blocker in the Big Ten.

He is tall and rather lanky, Mitchell may end up more of a center if he is able to add some weight.

Richard Pitino has a big man for the 2020 class. The program officially has 2 scholarships remaining to use. Do not be surprised if we have another commitment in the very near future.
