Time to move on to Iowa and get Floyd back

The time to relish in the Penn State win is over and it is Iowa championship week where the Gophers are currently 0-0. We can look back on that win when the season is over. Cause now it is Iowa week. Hate week. Floyd of Rosedale week.

Over the last 12 months, this team has done a number of things that haven’t been done here in a very long time.

  • Win at Madison for the first time since before Facebook existed (1994).
  • Won the Axe for the first time since 2003.
  • Started 9-0 for the first time since 1904.
  • Won a home game over a top 5 team for the first time since 1977.

The list can go on. But there’s more.

When was the last time Minnesota won in Iowa City? I’ll tell you, it was 1999. Since that date the Gophers have won Floyd 5 times, but all wins were in Minnesota. 1999 was a long time ago. It was when Napster and Blackberry were first introduced to consumers.

Not only have we not won a game at Kinnick, but after Minnesota just beat the #4 team in the country, they are the underdog!

So your’e telling me that a Big Ten team that is 9-0, having just proven on the national stage that they are legit are not 3 point underdogs to a 6-3 Iowa team? An Iowa team with an awful offense and who truly hasn’t beat anybody?

Seriously, underdogs to this team? I think I’ve got that out of my system now, but seriously. Moving on.

It is time to bring Floyd home. As the Gophers continue to do things that have truly not been done here in a very long time, it is time to bring Floyd home and allow him to spend some time with Paul Bunyan’s Axe.

The last time the Gophers had possession of both Floyd of Rosedale and Paul Bunyan’s Axe?

November 20th, 1993. Minnesota beat Iowa in the 1992 season and then beat Wisconsin in October of the 1993 season, so both were in our possession for just under a month.

Before the Penn State game I was of the mindset that I really didn’t care if we lost to Penn State, it was the Iowa game that I really wanted. Why? Losing to Penn State really doesn’t hurt our chances at winning the West if you take care of business at Iowa the following week. Beating Penn State changes the ceiling of this season, but the goal of winning the West still remains.

Beat Iowa and things continue to progress towards a trip to Indianapolis and eventually a trip to Pasadena. Both would be things either never done by this program or haven’t been accomplished in decades.

Moving on to Iowa and avoiding any sort of a let down this week is imperative. This game is really significant in so many ways. Win the West, get to Pasadena, get Floyd back. All very important and a win on Saturday is crucial.

We are 0-0 in the Iowa championship week.
