While the current iteration of Minnesota Golden Gophers basketball is finding its footing, coach Richard Pitino can take solace that the incoming class of recruits is off to a strong start. The University today announced the addition of four-star recruits Jamal Mashburn Jr. out of Miami (Brewster Academy) and Martice Mitchell out of Chicago (Bloom), who signed their National Letters of Intent to join the program. The Gophers have now signed at least one four-star prospect in each of the last six years.
Mashburn, a 6-2 guard, is a consensus four-star and top-100 prospect in the nation as well as one of the top 2020 recruits from Florida. Here is a profile on Mashburn that Gopher Nation drew up earlier this year. And, yes, he is the son of former NBA standout Jamal Mashburn.
”Jamal is one of the top scorers in his class,” said Pitino. “He has unlimited range and competes every second he gets on the court. Jamal is one of the hardest workers in the country. He will be a tremendous addition to our basketball program on and off the court.”
Mitchell, a 6-10 power forward, also ranks among the top five prospects in Illinois as well as a four-star prospect. Last season he averaged 11 points, nine rebounds and three blocks per game. Here is a profile on Mitchell that we drew up earlier this year.
”Martice has phenomenal potential,” Pitino said. “He can score inside and out. He’s versatile and has tremendous length. Every time I saw him he got better and better. He will be a terrific student athlete and will fit in right away into our locker room.”
Now let’s go get Dawson Garcia and close this one out!
