#8 Minnesota Football vs. #23 Iowa Hawkeyes: Staff Predictions

With the Penn State in the rear view, this weekend’s rivalry game versus Iowa looms especially large for Minnesota. The Battle for Floyd is always a big deal, but now we’re talking about wrapping up a Big Ten West title. A win over Iowa coupled with a Wisconsin loss to Nebraska would hand the West to the Gophers. And even if Wisconsin wins as expected, the maroon and gold would only need to beat the Northwestern on 11/23 to seal their shot at a Big Ten title.

Let’s go Gophers! FREE FLOYD!

The predictions

This week’s thoughts

Blake Ruane: You don’t know me at all if you think for even a second that I’m picking Iowa.

GoAUpher: Minnesota can score points. Thus far, Iowa can’t. I don’t think that changes. Minnesota wins comfortably with Iowa putting up a late touchdown to bring it inside two possessions.

gopherguy05: I picked against the Gophers last week. I was wrong. I feel shame. This game has all the markers of a classic trap game, but I think this team really is different. Penn State’s defense was one of the best in the nation and couldn’t stop Minnesota’s offense. I think at times Iowa will struggle too. If Minnesota can play smart football, Floyd comes home.

Gopher Nation: Iowa’s defense is pretty good, so I don’t think we hit 99 this week. But their offense is really bad, so they’ll probably hit negative 22 points to keep the same spread. GoAUpher Note: Negative points? Really GN? There’s no such thing, therefore this is an invalid entry for the purposes of Homer of the Week.

HipsterGopher: The Gophers haven’t had a lot of recent success in Iowa City, but in 1989 Iowa took a 7-43 home beating that will be replicated this week. NOTE: My bit for guessing the scores this year will be to match them up with previous Minnesota games. GoAUpher Note: Hipster retains his Homer of the Week crown by posting a valid score.

mowe0018: No Big Ten team has kept the Gophers under 31 points. SP+ has the Gophers winning by 3 points. This is an amalgamation of those two thoughts.

UStreet: Free Floyd!

wildcat00: I’m very nervous about this game. It’s on the road, the Gophers are no longer under the radar and Iowa is good, especially on defense. That said, I think Tanner Morgan and his trio of star wide receivers will do enough to win.

White Speed Receiver: Iowa’s offense? Crap. Iowa’s secondary? Crap. The only reason this one doesn’t get uglier is that a) Epenesa is a monster and will probably force a few incompletions and b) PJ’s gotta rest guys for Northwestern Championship Week.

zipsofakron: I can’t think of any better bulletin board material than being the 7th-ranked team in the nation and being 3-point underdogs to the Hawkeyes. It’s woodshed time.
