The Minnesota Golden Gophers signed 24 scholarship student-athletes on Wednesday, and head coach P.J. Fleck and co. wasted no time in building their recruiting class for 2021, earning a verbal commitment from Shakopee defensive end Deven Eastern.

Scouting Report
Eastern missed his sophomore season due to an injury, so a lot of programs were unfamiliar with him until the end of this year. The scholarship offers had been slow up until last week, when Nebraska and Minnesota both offered. It’ll be interesting to see where Eastern ends up playing on the defensive line for the Gophers, as he has shown the ability to play inside and stop the run or even be a stand up defensive end and set the edge. He certainly has the ideal frame for a defensive lineman at 6’5”, 260 lbs., and he can move well in spite of his size. Eastern has yet to be evaluated by any of the recruiting services, and I’ll be curious to see how they grade his potential.
